strangers, meeting for the first time?
The upcoming International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)

the rehabilitation of former child soldiers. Interestingly,
Salman Khan will be played under Shahrukh Khan.
Rubbishing the reports that Shahrukh might not attend the
film festival due his cold relationship with IIFA brand

ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, the organisers of the event
revealed that Shahrukh would perform at the event. He would
also captain the Indian celebrity cricket team that would
play against the Sri Lankan cricket team.

MUMBAI: Bollywood actors Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt along with the Sri Lankan cricketers announced the IIFA 2010 Weekend and Awards, to be held in Sri Lanka from 3 – 5 June, 2010.

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Wizcraft director Sabbas Joseph said, "IIFA 2010 will be bigger than the previous years and will see the highest attendance too."

As reported earlier by Businessofcinema.com, IIFA 2010 will host the IIFA Foundation celebrity cricket match, in support of UNICEF’s Cricket for Children project, to be played between India’s cinema stars and Sri Lankan cricketers. Mandira Bedi, Chunky Pandey and Javed Jaffrey will host the match.

Set to face-off are team captains of the three teams, Suniel Shetty, Kumar Sangakkara and Hrithik Roshan. Playing for the IIFA XI are Salman Khan, Dino Morea, Vinod Kambli and Kiran More, among others while Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahila Jayawardene support the Sri Lankan cause.

Sangakkara said, "As a Sri Lankan, I am very pleased that IIFA has chosen my country, Sri Lanka, to host the 11th IIFA Weekend and Awards. With the IIFA Foundation Celebrity Cricket Match, we are excited to bat for a cause and I know that my teammates and I are very excited to do our bit for the people affected by the conflict. We are also excited to be playing against the Indian superstars and hope the best team triumphs, all in the name of charity."

Roshan said, "It is indeed a great honor to play with the Sri Lankan cricketing greats and my friends in the fraternity. I support the initiative of Cricket for Children and IIFA Hands for Humanity and hope to put in my best efforts as captain of the team, towards the noble cause."

This year, IIFA Fashion Rocks will feature Indian designers Manish Malhotra and Vikram Phadnis and leading Sri Lankan designers Yoland and Kanchana (KT Brown). The Manish Malhotra collection is inspired from textures of the Mughal period influenced by the British Raj, albeit they will retain a contemporary perspective. While the collection by Vikram Phadnis, specially created for the IIFA Fashion Extravaganza, will have an influence of costumes and styles inspired by Indian films through the years. Sri Lankan designer Yoland’s collection will feature pieces depicting the Sri Lankan traditional mask and floral designs inspired from the country.

The second night of the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza – IIFA Bling will feature celebrity showcases by designers, Rocky S and Nandita Mahtani. The collection by Rocky S includes suits, creating an old English school feel. Nandita Mahtani’s line will consist of evening wear, appealing to women of all ages.

A special preview of upcoming film Lamhaa will be showcased at the IIFA Weekend. The thriller film, which is written and directed by Rahul Dholakia, stars Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher and Kunal Kapoor. It is a story on terrorism and militancy, set in Kashmir. Lamhaa stars, Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha Basu are set to toss the coin to determine the side playing first at the IIFA Charity Cricket Match.

The films, Help starring Mugdha Godse and Bobby Deol and Knock Out, starring Irfan Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Sanjay Dutt are also set to provide media with their first peek during the Videocon IIFA Weekend.

The special IIFA edition of Micromax Q55 Bling mobile phone, was also unveiled at the event.

Sri Lanka is in a new era of peace after winning its long fought war against the Tamil Tigers, says actress Jacqueline Fernandez, elated that the IIFA Awards are being held in her home country this year and looking forward to playing the perfect host to her Bollywood colleagues.

"It's one of the biggest events Sri Lanka has seen to date. I have quite a few roles to play at the IIFA this year," Jacqueline said in an interview.

"This is just not any award function for me because I am a Sri Lankan and everyone from the film fraternity is actually coming to Sri Lanka; so for me it's like a chance to welcome the people who have welcomed me so warmly," added the actress, who made her Bollywood debut with Aladin.

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards are being held in Colombo June 3-June 5 against a backdrop of massive protests from Tamils in India, who allege that members of the community continue to be discriminated in Sri Lanka and allege genocide against Sri Lankan Tamils during the war against the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).

Film associations from southern India have also decided to boycott any actor who participates in the IIFA event this year.

"It's sad, you know. It is a very critical moment for Sri Lanka. We are really hoping for support and cooperation from every one. We are in a new era. The war ended last year and we are trying to make our country as peaceful as possible to retain the peace. Some people want to ruin that. They should see the bigger picture and move on," said Jacqueline, a former Miss Sri Lanka.

She is quite familiar with the Hindi film industry. In 2009, she started her acting career with director Sujoy Ghosh's fantasy film Aladin in which she teamed up with Bollywood megastar and IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan as well as Sanjay Dutt and Riteish Deshmukh. She also played the lead role in romantic comedy Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai.

Jacqueline will not only welcome Bollywood stars but will also participate in the fashion extravaganza at the event.

"I will be the showstopper for a local designer Yoland and will be walking the ramp for (Hindi film industry's most sought after designer) Manish Malhotra," Jacqueline said.

Talking about the outfits she will showcase, she said: "It's not traditional Sri Lankan outfit, it's more of fusion. She (Yoland) has designed lots of saris and kaftans. She makes a fusion of what she gets because she is very well-known international designer."

The 25-year-old will also perform at the main awards function, but not on any Bollywood numbers.

"Actually, this year it's going to be very different for me. I am not going to perform on any songs from my films. I am going to perform with a Sri Lankan dance troupe. Being a Sri Lankan, I want to do the opening numbers, I want to do the welcome number and want to perform with Sri Lankan dancers," said Jacqueline.

Jacqueline, however, won't participate in the charity cricket match to be played between Bollywood celebrities and Sri Lankan cricketers to help rehabilitate former Tamil Tiger child soldiers.

"I am only there to support. I will support (Sri Lanka cricket captain) Kumar Sangakkara. He is a buddy and I will support his team," she said.

MUMBAI - Ace Sri Lankan cricketers Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya believe that IIFA Awards 2010, to be held in Colombo, is a “big opportunity” to promote Sri Lanka in Bollywood and foster a better relationship between the two countries.

“It’s a big opportunity to promote Sri Lanka among the film fraternity here. Sri Lankans are very big fans of Bollywood and the film industry is very popular in Sri Lanka,” Sanath Jayasuriya told IANS in an exclusive interview.

“Sri Lankans are looking forward to this big event. It’s nice for our country and good for the relations between the two countries,” he added.

Kumar Sangakkara, captain of both the Sri Lankan cricket team and actress Preity Zinta’s Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, agrees that Bollywood has a huge presence in Sri Lanka.

“Bollywood is a great hit in Sri Lanka and all over the world. I think everyone in the world has sat up and taken notice of how big Bollywood is, how attractive it is and how talented the stars are,” Sangakkara said.

He will reprise his role of a captain in charity cricket matches in Colombo between Indian celebrities and Sri Lankan cricketers, to be organised by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) to help rehabilitate former Tamil Tiger child soldiers.

“It will be lot of fun and lot of entertainment. It is also a very touching humanitarian cause as a village for 100 families will be built. Entertainment tied with IIFA humanity project and also Cricket for Children where child soldiers will be re-educated, rehabilitated and given a better way of life, is a great initiative,” Sangakkara said.

The wicket keeper and left-handed batsman said he was a big Bollywood movie buff.

“The first Hindi movie I watched was ‘Bombay’. Then I saw ‘Lagaan’ and have watched others like ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and ‘Water’. I like quite a few and the messages the films carry are very relevant and touching,” Sangakkara said.

While all-rounder cricketer Jayasuriya likes Shah Rukh Khan’s movies, Sangakkara likes all the Khans, appreciates Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah’s work and was all praise for Bollywood actresses.

Some of the big names from Bollywood may miss this year's IIFA awards here but that has not dampened the spirits of the organisers, who are leaving no stone unturned to give the venue a grand makeover.

The organisers, who are expecting a massive growth in tourism post the Bollywood extravaganza, are going all out to get the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium spruced up for the three day e beginning on Thursday. "The rig was flown down from Germany. It consists of around 580 moving lights like fixtures. They are called intelligent lighting," said Aman Anand, the head of the team installing the facilities at the stadium.
"It is one of the latest state of the art lighting system in the world available today. Basically it is the first time that we have brought such items in Sri Lanka which has everything hanging in the air and there is nothing on ground," Anand said. Cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara, who will be leading the Sri Lankan side in the 'Cricket for Children' event during the India International film Academy (IIFA) awards, said it was a privilege for the coutry to host the gala.
"It is a privilege for Sri Lanka to be hosting the awards. I think the whole idea behind entertainment, sport and society is to break down those barriers. Show the world the step you are taking to do that and the IIFA is another step in that direction," Sangakkara said. Forming the Sri Lankan Cricket side are Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kumara Sangakkara and Jayawardena, among many others while the Indian side will include superstars, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Suniel Shetty, Riteish Deshmukh and others.

Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said the event would add to rapid increase of tourists from India to Sri Lanka. "The added tourist arrival will add strength to our economy. No doubt IIFA will play a vital role in further strengthening the mutual cooperation between India and Sri Lanka," Abeywardena said.

Not willing to take any chances despite the end of the war with LTTE, Sri Lankan authorities will deploy as many as 6000 police personnel besides the army to ensure security during the event. Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal have decided to give the even a miss citing prior work commitments while brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan is yet to confirm his presence.
South Indian stars Kamal Haasan, Rajanikanth and director Mani Ratnam have already declined to attend the event. Sri Lanka as a venue for IIFA has angered many Tamil groups, who allege the Sri Lankan government of killing Tamils civilians at the height of the conflict between army and LTTE last year. The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce has threatened that Southern stars and filmmakers will boycott all the Bollywood stars who attend IIFA.

Popular Bollywood actors Vivek Oberoi, Boman Irani, Lara Dutta and Ritesh Deshmukh arrived in the country today to take part in the IIFA events which will be held in the country from Thursday, an official at the Sri Lanka Tourist Board said.

Boman Irani, Lara Dutta and Ritesh Deshmukh will host the IIFA award ceremony which will be held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

Several leading Bollywood actors, actresses and music artistes are expected to arrive in the country tomorrow and Thursday along with hundreds of Indian tourists.
However noted stars such as Shahrukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Aishwariya Rai and Abishek Bachchan will not attend the IIFA events in Colombo.

Actors Bobby Deol and Mugdha Godse will unveil the first look of their horror-thriller film ‘Help’ at The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) 2010, on June 3 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Also accompanying the duo will be the director of the film Rajeev Virani and the producers Sanjay Ahluwalia & Vinay Choksey.

At the event, the first promo of the film will played be on the screens exclusively for the media present from all around the World.

Directed by debutant director Rajeev Virani and produced by Sanjay Ahluwalia & Vinay Choksey of Rupali Aum Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., ‘Help’ was shot lavishly in Mauritius and Mumbai for a schedule of 45 days spread over a period of 8 months.

Bobby is very excited about his new film and the new look in the film and said: “I am very happy that the 1st look of our film will be unveiled at an International Platform like IIFA. The film is great and technically very sound. I believe in it in all ways and hope that the audiences will like the film too.”

Meanwhile, Mugdha said “I am very happy for HELP to be a part of IIFA 2010. I attended the IIFA last year also in Macao where my last film had its 1st look unveiled and glad that this time it’s ‘Help’ in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is one the finest films of my career till date and I am hoping it will be a big leap for me as an actor.”
Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi on Tuesday urged the Indian film fraternity to attend the annual awards festival in Sri Lanka despite protests from pro-Tamil rebel lobbies.

"Come to Colombo. I don't believe in boycotting the awards. Bollywood films are about building bridges, not putting up walls against people," Oberoi told reporters in Colombo during an event to promote the "Bollywood Oscars".

His comments came amidst official reports that Bollywood's leading stars may skip the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards this week, to avoid upsetting Tamils in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

IIFA's brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, his actor son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai -- Bollywood's leading couple -- have not yet confirmed their participation.

Media reports suggested that megastar Shah Rukh Khan may also opt out, citing a busy work schedule. Two people were killed when a Khan concert in Colombo was bombed in 2004, and he vowed then never to visit Sri Lanka again.

Sri Lanka's junior economic development minister, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said most top stars have confirmed their attendance for the three-day showpiece event that starts on June 3.

"Amitabh Bachchan and his family have not confirmed yet. But we are hopeful and the awards will go ahead as planned, despite the Tamil Nadu protests," Yapa said.
Tamils in Tamil Nadu share close cultural and religious links with Sri Lanka's minority ethnic Tamils. Tamil Nadu was once a safe haven for Tamil rebels who staged attacks in Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu politicians have also been highly critical of Sri Lanka's military campaign that saw the Tamil Tiger rebels crushed in May last year, ending a 37-year-old separatist conflict.
The pro-Tiger lobby argues that staging the IIFA awards in Sri Lanka endorses President Mahinda Rajapakse's stand on the war.
Oberoi said Bollywood presence in Colombo will help to boost Sri Lanka's post-war economy and attract funds to rebuild infrastructure and livelihoods in formerly war-torn areas in the island's north.

"I don't know much about the Sri Lankan conflict. But I've read about it a bit. Its roots were planted before I was born. But we must help Tamil people now to rebuild their lives, to give them some hope for tomorrow," Oberoi said.

Oberoi, who is scouting for locations to shoot a movie in Sri Lanka, is also reviving his charity, Project Hope, to rebuild schools, houses and community centres in the island's north.

IIFA Awards was announced today with a media meeting and later a bajan at Taj Samudra. Pictures shows the bajan recital titled Shri Lanka Ramayana Trails held a while ago at Taj Samudra. Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene and Minister for Resettlement Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan attended the function as chief guests. Barriers!! Dont think so the ticket for this 45min ride is Rs 2000.. its just a show case like thing for this station in my opinion.

Lara Dutta, a regular at IIFA for the past few years, left Mumbai on June 1 to join the Bollywood fraternity in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

She tweeted her excitement about the event yesterday.

Lara Dutta with Ritesh Deshmukh and Boman Irani on arrival at the Colombo Airport on June 1.

"Its been a crazy day today! Too much to do and too little time! Leaving tonite 4 IIFA! 3 days of pretty much the whole film frat together!"
Lara Dutta will be hosting the Awards show along with her Housefull co-stars Ritesh Deshmukh and Boman Irani.
"I am not performing this year but will be hosting the show along with Boman Irani and Ritesh Deshkmukh," the Blue actress told the media in Delhi on May 28 at the launch of international clothing line, Zara.

The three IIFA 2010 hosts were greeted at the Colombo airport with garlands.
Bathiya & Santhush performing live at IIFA: 3rd June at IIFA Fashion extravaganza, 4th June at IIFA Celebrity Cricket Match and on the 5th June at the Main IIFAAwards, with Channa Wijewardane, Jananath Warakagoda and Umara.

IIFA has always been known to come up with some noble causes associated with itself and continues the legacy this year too, and this time in Sri Lanka. And, what will be better than a cricket match to raise funds for a good cause?
The International Indian Film Academy, has decided to organize a charity cricket match between the B-town celebs and the Sri Lankan cricket team as an initiative to help rehabilitate the former Tamil Tiger child soldiers. The IIFA awards 2010 will be held from June 3 to 5 in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital. The celeb teams will be headed by Hrithik Roshan and Suniel Shetty.

As stated by Hrithik, he feels very proud to be a part of the IIFA team and is honoured to play with the Sri Lankan cricketers and his fraternity friends. He supports the initiative taken by IIFA and will put in his best to justify his position as the captain of a team towards this noble cause. Suniel Shetty also seemed to be very excited about the matches expressing his love for cricket.
The B-town celeb team will consist of actors like Salman Khan, Dino Morea and other cricketers like Vinod Kambli and Kiran More. The Sri Lankan team will be headed by captain Sangakkara, which will include players like Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya.

The celebs will be divided into two teams because of the overwhelming participation by the fraternity. It would be interesting to see the celebs struggle it out against the cricketers and raise maximum resources to help the noble cause. We appreciate the initiative taken by IIFA.
